Read the excerpt from an interview with holocaust survivor and artist Chava Wolf . Choose a level and answer the questions below.

You paint with intense colors. What is the meaning of color for you?

Chava Wolf: I am obsessed with colors. I have to go twice a week into the city, near the open market, to see lots of colors. When I see a nice fabric, I buy it. When I see a nice bag, I buy it because of the colors. I am partial to colors, maybe because of the black that [life] was once. When I tell my story I find myself back there. I am still the same young girl. If I can paint with those colors, it is a sign that I am still optimistic. I write in black on white and I paint with color and hide my pain.

Chava Wolf: “Do you see the blow that I suffered? A fairly normal child with a pretty dress. I have wheels, as if our lives are rolling unsteadily. Instead of hands I have wings. Like I want to fly.”

 This is the Nazi demon that came into the woods. He had a horse. I made his mouth look like a black hole without "normal" eyes. He used to come and his eyes were light blue, cold as tin. He used to kill people just like that. His boots were leathery, shiny. Notice how many eyes I drew, or no eyes [there are two versions, the painting is a diptych]. And his mouth, when he opened it was scary because he shouted. It was very scary. The sun here is sad. I also drew flowers, I guess I wanted to see flowers. The winter of 1941 was 41 Celsius below zero. People were freezing to death and every day a cart would pass and pick them up. It was terrifying.

I have yet said everything,
It's contained within me, I will not say everything;
Something is clutching my throat –
The fear of opening a window.

The window is open; the black is noticeable.
The moon appears bright and round.
My soul is shrinking
Attacked with fear
I cannot shout
I don't want to cry – I am choking!

My eyes are tearing
A drop falls
Holding pain within
Bodies, bodies
Packed on carts
Appear before my eyes
A child looks on and cries.

People, children

Horror to behold
To shout, to be silent?

Reflect on our sequencing activity from class today. Your comic strips came out wonderfully! GREAT JOB! For homework, complete one of the levels below.

Level 1: Choose three of main events below and put them in order.

Level 2: Choose five of the main events below and put them in order.

Level 3: Put the main events in order of when they happened.

• Ponyboy is jumped by 5 Socs and is rescued by the gang of Greasers.
• Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally meet Marcia and Cherry at a drive-in movie. Ponyboy told Cherry how Johnny had been jumped by the Socs.
• Marcia and Cherry leave with Greasers, but on the way home they run into Socs. Marcia and Cherry end up getting into their car. Ponyboy was late coming home and Darry hits him. Ponyboy and Johnny run off to the park, to cool of Ponyboy.
• Johnny and Ponyboy get jumped by the same Socs that jumped Johnny and Johnny ends up killing a Soc named Bob, because they were drowning Ponyboy. The boys go to Dally for help and run off to the country for safety.
• Johnny and Ponyboy cut their hair to disguise themselves. The boys spend 5 days at the church waiting for a sign. Dally shows up and has a letter from Soda. Cherry is a spy for the Greasers and there is a war going on between Socs and Greasers.
• Johnny plans to turn himself in. Theres a fire at the church and the boys save kids who are trapped inside. The Greasers are declared heroes and Ponyboy is reunited with his brothers.
• Ponyboy has a in-depth conversation with Randy, a Soc. Ponyboy confirms his thinking that Socs have problems and things are rough all over.
• The boys visit Dally and Johnny in the hospital. Johnny may not live but has the will to. The rumble is coming and Cherrry gives them the rules.
• The Socs and the Greasers rumble and the Greasers win. Johnny dies from his injuries from the fire.
• Dallas robs a store and calls for help. The boys go to hide him, but he is shot by the police and killed.
• Ponyboy is recovering from his concusion. He is delirious and believes he is to blame for Bobs death.
• The Curtis boys get to stay together. Ponyboy is asigned a theme for school and chooses to share his journey as a novel The Outsiders.
